When developing an ABS injection molded part, the plastic material is only part of the equation.
The final appearance, texture, color, and even the perceived quality of a product can be strongly influenced by its surface finish.
For consumer electronics, automotive components, appliances, medical devices, and other plastic products, ABS is widely used because it offers a good balance of strength, impact resistance, dimensional stability, and processability. It also works well with a wide range of secondary finishing processes.
But choosing a surface treatment should not be an afterthought.
The required finish can affect mold design, draft angle, material selection, production cost, appearance inspection, and even the overall manufacturing process.
In this article, we look at four common surface treatment options for ABS injection molded parts and explain when each one may be suitable.

1. Painting: Flexible Colors and Surface Effects

Painting is one of the most flexible finishing options for ABS plastic parts.
It allows manufacturers to achieve a wide range of colors and visual effects that cannot always be achieved simply by selecting a different resin color.
Depending on the coating system, painted ABS parts can have:
  • Glossy finishes
  • Matte finishes
  • Metallic effects
  • Soft-touch surfaces
  • Custom colors
  • Protective coatings
A typical painting process may include cleaning, surface preparation, primer application, color coating, and curing.

Why choose painting?

Painting is particularly useful when a product requires a specific brand color or a premium cosmetic appearance.
For example, consumer electronics and household appliances may require a precise color matching system, while automotive interior components may require a matte or soft-touch finish.
Another advantage is flexibility. Different colors or surface effects can often be achieved without changing the injection mold itself.
What should engineers consider?
The quality of the molded ABS surface still matters.
Flow marks, sink marks, weld lines, scratches, or other molding defects may remain visible through a thin coating. Therefore, painting should not be viewed simply as a way to "hide" molding problems.
At Akinotek, surface requirements are considered during the DFM and molding stages so that the molded substrate provides a suitable foundation for the finishing process.

2. Electroplating: Creating a Metallic Appearance on ABS

If the goal is to give a plastic component the appearance of metal, electroplating is one of the most established options for ABS.
ABS is particularly suitable for plastic electroplating because its surface can be chemically treated to create a suitable base for subsequent metal layers. Typical plated structures may involve copper, nickel, and chrome layers, depending on the required appearance and performance.
The result can provide a highly reflective and metallic appearance while keeping the underlying component lightweight.

Common applications

ABS electroplating can be found in products such as:
  • Automotive interior and exterior decorative parts
  • Appliance controls and trim
  • Bathroom and sanitary components
  • Consumer electronics
  • Decorative knobs and bezels

Advantages

The main advantages include:
  • Premium metallic appearance
  • High visual impact
  • Good surface hardness
  • Improved wear resistance
  • Lightweight compared with solid metal components
However, electroplating is more process-intensive than conventional painting.
The ABS grade, part geometry, wall thickness, surface condition, sharp edges, and mold design can all influence plating quality. The process can also add significant cost compared with molded-in texture or painting.
For this reason, electroplating requirements should ideally be reviewed before tooling begins.

3. Mold Polishing: High-Gloss and Premium Plastic Surfaces

Not every surface treatment needs to happen after injection molding.
For many ABS components, the desired appearance can be created directly through the mold surface finish.
If a product requires a smooth, high-gloss appearance, the mold cavity can be polished to a corresponding finish. The plastic part then replicates the prepared mold surface during injection molding.
This approach is particularly useful for cosmetic plastic housings and visible exterior components.

Where is a polished finish commonly used?

Typical applications include:
  • Consumer electronics housings
  • Appliance covers
  • Decorative bezels
  • Automotive interior components
  • Premium consumer products
A polished mold surface can provide a clean and high-end appearance without adding a separate painting process.
However, high-gloss surfaces also make imperfections easier to see.
Small scratches, sink marks, flow lines, weld lines, and other molding defects may become more noticeable on a highly polished surface.
This means that achieving a premium glossy finish requires more than simply polishing the mold.
Part design + mold design + molding process + material selection all need to work together.

4. Mold Texturing: Matte, Grip and Surface Character

For products that do not require a glossy surface, mold texturing is another widely used option.
Instead of applying a coating after molding, a controlled texture is created on the mold cavity. The texture is then transferred directly onto the ABS component during injection molding.
Depending on the required appearance, textures can range from fine matte surfaces to deeper patterns such as leather grain or other customized textures.

Why use a textured surface?

A textured ABS surface can provide several benefits:
  • Reduces visible fingerprints
  • Helps hide minor cosmetic imperfections
  • Creates a matte or satin appearance
  • Improves grip
  • Adds visual depth
  • Creates a more consistent appearance across production parts
This makes textured surfaces common in consumer electronics, appliance housings, automotive interiors, handheld products, and other products that are frequently touched.

Texture is a tooling decision

One important point is often overlooked:
Mold texture affects the mold design.
Texture depth can influence draft angle and part release. If the texture is too deep or the draft angle is insufficient, the molded part may have difficulty releasing from the cavity.
Therefore, the texture should be defined before the mold design is finalized rather than added as an afterthought.

How to Choose the Right ABS Surface Treatment?

There is no single "best" surface finish for every ABS injection molded part.
The right choice depends on the product's appearance, function, production volume, budget, and end-use environment.

High-gloss plastic appearance

The most important point is to select the finish before tooling, not after.

Surface Finish Starts with Product Design

For injection molded ABS parts, surface finishing is closely connected to product engineering.
For example, a texture requirement may influence draft angles.
A high-gloss surface may require tighter control of molding defects.
Electroplating may require a specific ABS grade and geometry.
Painting may require masking areas or additional surface preparation.
This is why surface finish should be included in the DFM discussion together with:
  • Material selection
  • Wall thickness
  • Draft angle
  • Parting line
  • Gate location
  • Ejector layout
  • Mold polishing
  • Mold texture
  • Cosmetic inspection requirements
Making these decisions early can help reduce tooling modifications, additional processing, and unexpected production costs.

From DFM to Finished ABS Parts

At Akinotek, we look at surface finishing as part of the complete manufacturing process rather than an isolated secondary operation.
Our project workflow can cover:
Product Design → DFM Analysis → Material Selection → Prototyping → Mold Development → Injection Molding → Surface Treatment → Assembly → Quality Inspection
Depending on the project requirements, secondary operations can include painting, plating, silk-screen printing, pad printing, laser engraving, hot stamping, water transfer, and other finishing processes.
This integrated approach allows surface requirements to be considered together with manufacturability, tooling, production cost, and quality control.

Developing a New ABS Injection Molded Product?

If you already have a 3D CAD file, 2D drawing, reference sample, or simply an initial product concept, our engineering team can review the project and help evaluate:
  • ABS material selection
  • Surface finish requirements
  • DFM considerations
  • Mold design
  • Injection molding process
  • Secondary finishing
  • Prototype development
  • Mass production requirements
A good surface finish starts long before the part leaves the injection molding machine.
At Akinotek, we help turn product requirements into manufacturable plastic parts — from the first design review to finished production.
